Transportation in Abidjan

Abidjan moves on three tiers. The bright-orange SOTRA buses and their newer express cousins, the "Bus Rapide," form the cheap backbone, crowded but reliable along the main arteries like Boulevard de Marseille and Rue des Jardins. Shared taxis (red for Plateau, green for Cocody) dart in between, costing a fraction of a private cab and following fixed routes you'll learn by color. For comfort, ride-hailing apps such as Yango and TaxiJet give metered fares and air-conditioning; they're a moderate splurge but still cheaper than negotiating at a hotel rank. First-timers should download the SOTRA mobile pass before leaving the airport Wi-Fi zone, top it up once and you can tap onto both buses and the light ferry across Ébrié Lagoon, avoiding the scrum for coins. Skip the unmarked "woro-woro" minivans that swarm outside Adjamé Market; they're fast but operate like a private club and will overcharge anyone who hesitates. If you're staying in Plateau or Marcory, the ferry from Le Plateau to Treichville is often quicker than sitting in the bridge traffic at rush hour. From Félix-Houphouët-Boigny Airport, the official taxi rank on the arrivals level is the only licensed option, agree the meter or a fixed fare before loading bags. There's no rail link, and hotel shuttles, while comfortable, are priced at a premium. If you land during the evening rush, a pre-booked ride-hail car can be worth the extra cost to skip the taxi queue.
